چکیده

Urinary bladder (or bladder) cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with the highest incidences in industrialized countries (Pelucchi et al 2006). It is the fourth most incident cancer in males and ninth most in females accounting for more than 67,000 new cases per year in United States (Jemal et al 2007), where the annual age adjusted incidence rate for men is approximately 32 per 100,000 (Jemal et al 2005). Urothelium cancers account for 5.6% of male and 1.8% of female cancers in India with an actual crude rate (ACR) incidence of about 1 in 174 in men and 1 in 561in women (Kamarana et al., 2000). From an epidemiological survey (Dhar et al 1993) in Kashmir, bladder cancer has an annual incidence of 9.7 (2.5%) ranking 9th in all types of cancers. This was a partial presentation of bladder cancer incidence as the survey was done in a single hospital catering the needs of 1/3 of the population. Presently bladder cancer is showing an alarming increase in Kashmir as evidenced by the fact that we could record and collect samples from 55 patients from early March 2008-2009. Histologically, more than 90% of bladder-cancer cases are transitional cell (urothelial) carcinoma, approximately 5% are squamous cell carcinoma, and less than 2% are adenocarcinoma. Nearly 80% of patients who initially

Mutations of p53 Gene in Skin Cancers: a Case Control Study

Background: The most frequently mutated tumor suppressor gene found in human cancer is p53. In a normal situation, p53 is activated upon the induction of DNA damage to either arrest the cell cycle or to induce apoptosis. However, when mutated, p53 is no longer able to properly accomplish these functions. The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of p53 gene in cases of skin cancer...

Prevalence of K-RAS mutations and CA125 tumor marker in patients with ovarian carcinoma

Background: Ovarian carcinoma is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death among females. K-ras codon 12 mutations are commonly occurring mutations in different types of cancers and leads to resistance against anti-EGFR therapeutics. Hence, determination of mutations in k-ras gene is crucial for predicting response to anti-EGFR therapies. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of k...

Genetic aberrations of the K-ras proto-oncogene in bladder cancer in Kashmiri population.

PURPOSE To assess the frequency of specific point mutations in the K-ras gene in a group of Kashmiri patients with bladder cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS We analyzed the incidence of K-ras exon 1 gene mutations in tumors and surgical margins in 60 patients with transitional cell carcinoma of varied clinical stages and histological grades using the polymerase chain reaction-single strand confor...

بررسی جهش‌های ژن N-RAS در اطفال مبتلا به لوسمی لنفوبلاستیک حاد(ALL)

Background: Acute leukemia is the prevalent malignancy in pediatrics. One of the most important causing factors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia is mutations of proto oncogenes and their chang in to oncogenes. Activation of N-RAS proto-oncogene due to point mutations plays a major role in ALL malignancy. Since there was no report on the frequency of N-RAS gene mutation in Iranian pediatric AL...

Activated H-ras gene mutations in transitional cell carcinoma of urinary bladder in a Kashmiri population.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND The primary aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of H-ras specific point mutations among a group of Kashmiri patients diagnosed with bladder cancer. We also explored the correlation of clinic-pathological status of the illness with these mutations. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN The DNA samples of both tumor and normal tissue were evaluated for the occurrence of H-ras ...
